Partition help

I upgraded to Win XP from 98. In 98 I partitioned the
drive into three partitions. C: was allocated 2.43 gig,
D: 21 gig and E:4.7 gig. I keep getting a low disk
availability when my available storage on C: goes below
200MB. I've tried everything to reduce the size of the
files on C:, but ultimately it fills back up and this
problem is recreated. I have backed up all files on to a
external HD and what I would like to do is to combine the
C:and D: into a single partition. Can this be done
without having to reinstall XP? (I'd have to reinstall
Win 98 then use the XP upgrade) r/Terry

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to purchase and use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

The alternative is to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP:

How to Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313348&Product=winxp

Use the following procedure for a "clean install" of Windows XP:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Thanks for the info Carey. Will this work with a Windows
XP upgrade disk...remember I upgraded from Win 98 to XP
or will I have to purchase yet another copy of XP? I'd
rather not buy any new software, partition magic or other
software. The client I have will probably be obsolete in
another year or so.

As long as you have an old Microsoft 95/98/ME CD,
you can perform a clean install with an upgrade version
of Windows XP.

Don't try running your 98 disc,had C: 5.2 D: 27.4
E:5.1 ,needed more space, didn't want to buy partition
magic,98 had a line to save files from partion,it didn't
and then formated XP,then wouldn't load either one.lost
the files on the disc-knew I would so the backup was
great.Spent over an hour on the phone with microsoft
telling them what I was trying to acomplish on the SAME
computer,they finally hooked me up.
