I'm using win xp and was going to install a new
harddrive. My question is do I need to boot to Dos
bootable diskette and type FDISK at the A: prompt in
order to partition the drive? If I'm not wrong I guess I
could always partition the harddrive when installing win
xp and doesn't need to use a bootable disk, could anyone
reconfirm this? Many thanks!

Make sure the new harddrive has the jumpers set right, then
put it in.
Boot XP and go to the disk manager.
(diskmgmt.msc from the RUN box)

from there you can activate it (make it online) and assign it
a drive letter.

No.

Either boot the XP CD and run Setup to do a New installation on the new
drive (Which will then include partitioning and formatting it as part of
setup), or use third party software to 'clone' the existing partition to
the new drive first. That is what I would probably do, using BootIT NG,
from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional
trial) - there are other tools as well like Norton Ghost of Drive Image
