Part of Signature disappears...

George

Am using Outlook XP (2002). I have a standard signature at the bottom of
every email...the usual name, phone, and a logo. It's in the signature
picker, and all emails are created as HTML. When I click NEW and begin
typing a new email...sure enough the signature and logo is right there at
the bottom. Then I send the email...

It used to work fine, but now the recipients just get a square box with a
small red X for the logo. The logo has a hyperlink...and that still
works...you just click the empty white square box and it goes to my website.

Can anyone help with why the logo doesn't show anymore. It looks good in
Options, it looks good when click NEW, it just goes blank once it hits
someones inbox.

By the way, I tested it on my inbox, and I do see other formatting like
colors and two different fonts...so its reading HTML...just something's gone
bad with the logo. You don't suppose the ISP is stripping out graphics? I
get other peoples graphical emails, so unsure situation

Thanks,
George

George,

I'm not sure, this is just a guess, but it sounds like
you figured out what is happening. Apparently many
malevolent emails sent utilize HTML formatting because I
see all these techies talking about automatically
disabling the HTML email functions on receipt.

However, if it still doing it when you're sending your
own email with the HTML logo to yourself, surely your OWN
provider isn't stripping it off.

Here's what I would try.

Lets do this first:
1) Start a new email
2) Right click on that part of your logo
3) Click Properties
4) Make sure the picture source reflects the exact
website location of your logo like
http://www.georgessite.com/thelogo.html

5) If it does, then right click the logo again.
6) This time click, view source. (You'll see the html
code for your logo etc)
7) Goto the top and click File/Save As
8) For the file name be sure and save it with a .html
extension, like georgelogo.html
9) Click save and save it to a folder you'll remember.
10) Now, open a regular internet explorer window
11) Click File/Open and browse to the georgelogo.html
file you created.
12) click OK

Tell me what you see after all that, if you see your logo
there is not a problem with your html code or website
where the image is...somehow your email service provider
is stripping it out if NOONE can see your logo. I would
call their tech support, send them an email and see if
they see your logo. If you don't see your logo,
something is stripping our your logo and just showing
your logo image placeholder.

I don't know if all this helps, but it could be so many
things at this point.

Rob,

Thanks for taking time to list all the steps and things to try. A great way
to diagnose. When I went to do these, I'm not sure if we're getting closer
to the answer or deeper into the mystery, here's some things I looked at and
did, would welcome any insights from anyone on these:

-NEW EMAIL TEST. I clicked NEW email, which displays the signature/logo
perfectly at the bottom. If you right click the logo...it's a picture...so
you don't see "properties", instead you do see the picture toolbar as well
as a menu including some things like the hyperlink that goes with the logo.
So you can't really do much with the logo here. And when I send this email
to myself, remember...the logo shows as an empty white box (with red X) in
both the SENT box and the INBOX when it arrives.

-NEW TYPE OF LOGO TEST. I went to the original logo.jpg file and re-saved
it as logo.gif. I inserted that logo in the above email (In Outlook...
Insert > Picture > From file). I sent the email to myself. You won't
believe it, but the email in the SENT box and INBOX now show BOTH logos
perfectly (except that the logo.gif is rougher, not as crisp). This doesn't
make any sense that the gif would somehow "cause" the jpg to start showing.

-SEE WHAT OTHERS SEE TEST. I went back to square one...the original
logo.jpg, and just sent a test email to a PC across the room. In the INBOX
of that person's PC, the logo shows great. So why is it absent in my SENT
box and INBOX.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Mystified
