Maybe this is just me being paranoid, but on many computer tech sites that
help you out with viruses and such. They ask for hijackthis logs of your
computer and other such logs. Is it safe to put all that information on the
internet? It even says your computer name on some of those logs. Which I
think you can change, but not quite sure. Also, there are sites that email a
person a new password to enter a site if they have forgotten theirs. They
also put the IP Address that requested it. If someone find your IP Address is
that wrong?

I was more than a little surprised to hear the following from "lively_7""

You are revealing your IP address all the time, perhaps without realising
it. You reveal it in every e-mail you send, you've revealed it in this
newsgroup post, and you reveal it to every website you visit. Main thing is
make sure that your computer is secure in other respects - ie free from
spyware, viruses, a good firewall as already suggested , secure accounts
etc. Might be a good idea to not reveal your account user name in your
HijackThis logs, though, as that could potentially be a security weakness,
depending on your setup.

What would the account user name be located on the log? What would it even
look like? How could it be a security weakness?

If there are any references of the form

"C:\Documents and Settings\AccountName ........" in the log, then that would
reveal your account name to all and sundry.

Disguising your account name + computer name would help to protect against
any remote login attempts.

And if you're wondering why on earth I wrote that, well "lively_7""

Doesn't seem to be anything of the sort in my log. Although my computer name
did show up. "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.Computer name here.000\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft".

I think I'm okay thank you for your information.

The Hijackthis log is a notepad doc. you can edit anything on it before
posting it.
