Parallel port slows computer

I have a LaserJet series II printer running through a parallel port under XP
SP2. It ran fine under w98. Now, under XP, when the print job begins, it
appears that the majority of the processor is consumed by the print job
because the computer almost comes to a complete stop until the print job
completes. This happens on both of my home PCs. I am using the standard
driver that comes with XP. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for
your help.

D/L the correct drivers from the manufacterer, also check the port type

Go to the Device Options property sheet and make sure all the settings match
your printer, especially the amount of installed memory. Also, on the Fonts
property sheet allow font substitution according to the font substitution
table. If your printer has a Postscript SIMM, use the printer driver and
PDF file from Adobe rather than the one in XP.
