Paragraph Numbering in an Appendix

I

I'm working on a large document with about 150 pages in the main body and
with nine appendixes. The body uses outline numbering (1, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.),
but Appendix E also needs to have a separate outline structure that needs to
be numbered as E-1, E-1.1, E-1.1.1, etc.).

I'm using Headings 1 through 5 in the main body, and I've tried creating new
styles that I call E1, E2, E3, and E4, for the headings in Appendix E. E1 is
based on "no style," E2 is based on E1, etc.

My problem is that I can't get the numbers to track from the earlier levels.
For example, I'm getting this:

E-1
E-1.1
E-2
E-1.2

If I choose "Restart Numbering" on E-1.2, it changes to E1.1, when it should
be E-2.1.

I've read Shauna Kelly's article at
http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html but I don't
understand parts of it. For example, she says I should "Tick the box that
says Restart Numbering After, and ensure it's set to the correct level," but
I can't find a box that says Restart Numbering After. I can only find
Restart Numbering.

I will greatly appreciate any help you can give.

I'm using Windows XP Professional with Office 2003.

Thanks,

Fred

Hi, Suzanne,

Thanks for the response. I'll work on it and see if I can make my numbering
behave.

Sometimes I think that some of my documents are possessed. If I could
exorcize all the demons that infest this document, every herd of swine within
a hundred miles would be in danger.
