PapaJohn - Please help w audio

I have read several posts about analog audio capture on this site, your site,
and hauppauge with no definative answer. I am using the following:

I am running Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Capture on a HP Media Center PC
m1170n computer. I am trying to figure out why I get no audio when I capture
video from my analog Sony Hi8 video camera using Windows Movie Maker 2. It is
hooked to the computer using AV cord (yellow and red) and I have selected
Composite video but MM2 does not have an audio selection for line in. Video
is fine, just no audio.

I have checked my device driver..it says everything is working fine and
everything else is working fine.

I like the MM2 is set up and your tutorials on how to do are very helpful,
but I have to have sound. Is this just an MM2 problem and if so how can I
fix it?

Thanks for your help. I am pulling my hair out!

I don't think it's a Movie Maker issue... more of your overall setup
supporting capturing that way.

On my Toshiba Media Center laptop, I can capture from my Hi8 camcorder 3
ways: into a Dazzle 80, into my digital camcorder and use the pass-thru
feature, and into an RF Modulator feeding it in as if it's a TV channel...
I've never had to use the line-in for audio, but it does show up as an
option in my capture wizard window.

I've read mixed posts about those being successful or not with a Hauppauge
WinTV card.... maybe someone who successfully uses your system will
advise...

You mention yellow and red.... yellow is the video and red one of the
channels of audio. Is your camcorder a mono model without the other output
for audio?

Are there other inputs to choose from? Maybe you can experiment with those.
I don't have this card but was unable to record (although I could hear the
sound while the recording was being made). I kept trying line in, which
seemed the most obvious, and then finally tried some others. Stereo worked
for me.

Thanks for responding.

The audio options in my capture window are:

-Realtek HD front pink jack
(although this is the default option for the composite video it is actually
the microphone jack!!)
-backline in/mic, front line in
(where you would think it would work but it doesn't - see below for the
error message)
-hauppauge WINTV PCI II 26xx
that ought to work too!
-Realtek HD digital input
can't find this one
-Realtek HD front green jack
This is has an icon of headphones

The video options in the capture window are:
TV tuner
S video
Composite

Yes,

Yes there are, but when I try one of these options MM2 gives the message:
"A problem was encountered while trying to connect to one of your capture
devices. Check your capture devices, and then try again" and the capture
window closes.

Does this help? Thanks

Oops, my earlier post was in the wrong order.

I heard back from Hauppauge today. They said:
"Windows Movie Maker from Microsoft does not support our PVR product to
directly capture with it."
Not sure I totally agree with him since I did directly capture the video,
just no sound! Guess I will have to take an alternate route.

Thanks again for your help.
