paging file (virtual memory

steve

my pc is pentium3, with 18gb hdisk, 7gb of free space,
128mb ram. my problem is after around 4 hours of system
start up i am getting the message 'system is low on
virtual memory',this will be corrected by the system
itself until to a point that it will reach the maximum
setting for the paging file. i set it to 300 - 600mb, i
know this setting is more than what is recommended but
still getting the same error 4 to 5 times daily,
restarting the system will solve the problem temporarily
but i have to reboot many times in a single day. i am not
using any special apps or something just msoffice.

any advice from u guys is highly appreciated.
thanks a lot...

It seems that one of your applications suffers from a memory
leak, i.e. it demands more and more memory resources until
none are left. It is also possible that an application fails to
return its memory space to the operating system when you
terminate it.

You can check the first problem by looking at the Task
Manager, Processes tab. It shows the amount of memory
required by each process. Is one of them growing as time
goes by?

When you look at the Task Manager, Performance Tab,
then you can see the amount of "free memory". It should
go up and down in line with the applications you launch
and terminate. Does it?

Ultimately you may have to have a serious word with the
supplier of your offending application.

thanks so much to "Pegasus (MVP)".....
i followed ur advice and u are right, there was a program
thats eating up my memory/pagefile. i closed all running
apps and monitor the activity thru task manager, the cpu
usage has gone up to 100% and the memory graph lime is
gradually going down and the only file active is
the "Hbinst.exe" (Hotbar), i deleted it from my system, i
have to observe for sometime but i have a feeling that we
sovled the problem...THANKS AGAIN. I also have a prety
good knowledge in computers but sometimes i needed help
just like anybody else from the fellow computer wizard..:)
