pagination problems

First problem: I'm getting page numbering starting in the beginning of the
file and then again several times in the middle of a file (plus there are a
few other irregularities with the numbering). How do I make sure Word
recognizes the entire file as one continuous text for consecutive pagination?
Second problem: Can I get my third page to be the beginning of the page
numbers (p3 would say p1, p4 would say p2, etc.)?

While I followed each step indicated in the article and certainly learned
more about pagination, my page numbering problems are not solved. Perhaps it
is because I have mulitple lined transcripts on pages. When inserting line
numbering, Word creates the numbered text as its own section. I generally
want the text before and after the transcript to be continuous, so I create
continuous sections rather than sections with page breaks. At any rate, Word
becomes fouled up and can't accept my page numbers when I use "start at"
function. Also I can use "Big Idea #7 to subtract 2 pages from each
displayed page number, but of course that doesn't help the jumps and skips
that I believe are a result of multiple continuous sections within a single
page. At this point, I've removed the displayed page numbers from the
document as I simply can't control the numbers in the latter part of the
document.

You need to access the "hidden" sections whose header/footer is
inaccessible. Either insert a temporary page break in the middle of the page
or, with the insertion point in one of those midpage sections, go to Insert
| Page Numbers, click on Format, set the numbering to continue from the
previous section, OK, and then be careful to click Close rather than OK in
the Insert Page Numbers dialog.

It still didn't work. I'm fine through page 16. On page 17, I have 2 section
breaks (continuous). I have done what you suggested -- with my cursor on
each of the section breaks, I went to Insert Page Numbers, Format, ans et
numbering on continue, clicked OK, and then clicked on Close in Insert Page
Numbers Dialogue. Instead of the page having the number 17, it now displays
page 2. Any further suggestions?

Instead of placing your insertion point on the section break, place it
between them, *in* the section itself, once for the top section (before the
first section break) and again for the middle one.

hat solved the problem. I had to go back to a few sections prior to that page
as they weren't formatted for continuous numbering, but once I did that (and
added {page} to a page with a missing number, my pagination was in perfect
order. Then to have the display number 1 to start on page 3, I used {IF
{PAGE} > 2 "{= {PAGE} - 2} "}. That has worked as well. Thank you for your
help in solving these very annoying problems.

It would be much simpler just to start the numbering at 3 in Section 1 and
let it be continuous for the remaining sections. It is not necessary for a
page to display a number in order to have a number. I hope you are not
planning to include a TOC; if you do, it will pick up the numbering of the
{ PAGE } field rather than your calculated page number.
