Hello,

For several days, when I transfer music from an LP to my hard drive as
a wav file, if the selection lasts longer than about 16 minutes the
computer blocks. The software that I use has a timer and it stops for
a few seconds, then resumes, then stops, etc. In the observer of
events I find the warning "Error on hard drive 1 during a pagination
operation" [My computer is French so I'm translating.] I find hundreds
of these warnings all at the times when the comupter is blocked. The
drive itself is a new Maxtor, has loads of room, and I've checked with
scandisk which finds no problems. Can anyone tell me what this means
and how to correct it? Thanks.

There is no "scandisk" under WinXP, only under Win98. Are
you sure you're in the right newsgroup? If you use WinXP then
you should run this command:

chkdsk c: /f /r

Allow the machine to reboot, then check the Event Viewer.

That's just what I did. And yes, it is Windows XP Professional that
I'm using.

Sorry. I was wrong. I had omitted the /f. I ran it again with that
included and it found some errors and corrected them. i haven't had
time to see if that has solved the problem but I guess it probably
has. If not, I'll be back for more advice. Meanwhile, thank you very
much indeed.

I'm not a smart as Pegasus, but I would guess you are running out of
RAM(memory), and Windows goes to write the data to the swap file, finds the
swap file being used by your recording program; and crashes.

I would:
1. Turn off all unneeded programs when recording.
2. Manually increase the Windows swap file size to maximum when using the
recording program.
3.Buy more RAM(memory) and put it in the machine. I'm running 2gigs myself.

Good Luck.

You need to keep an eye on this disk. Sometimes bad
clusters have a habit to spread. I suppose you back up
your important files regularly to an independent medium.
