Pagefile mystery on XP

D

Hello there,

I've got an old PC with 256M RAM, recently added to 512, running XP SP2
on drive C: and allocated a virtual memory to dirve E:. It was all fine
until I changed the virtual memory to C: and set "no page file" on E:.
There happens to be a mysterious pagefile.sys on drive D:, of 764MB
size, and one on C:, which is allocated by me. The virtual memory
controll in Properties of My Computers shows I've got 764MB virtual
memory, but actually I've got 800MB on C: but nothing elsewhere. So
strange no matter how I set the virtual memory, the pagefile.sys on D:
is never changed, never disappeared and always of fixed size.

Anybody got any ideas?

PS: only one XP is installed.

Can you delete the pagefile that is on drive D:?
If not try booting into Safe Mode and then deleting it.

Good luck

Look at the time stamp on the pagefile on drive D:. The pagefile in use will
always have a time stamp of when you booted up the computer.

You will likely see that the one on drive D: is not current, and that it is
not being used. If this is the case, it is not necessary and be deleted.
