pagefile, how to delete from C: drive when I've moved it to the E: drive

Win XP Home.
Drive partitioned C: and E: CD drive is D:.

I've moved the pagefile to the E: drive in My Computer and there is no
pagefile on the C: drive.

However the pagefile.sys is still there at 736Mb and update each boot time.
I want to remove it to recover the space but it will not allow me to delete
because it is a system file.

I expect that I have missed a trick somewhere so can a more savvy person in
this NG advise how I can get the 736Mb back?

TIA
