Page Width Doesn't Follow Window

Using IE6/xp and 17 inch monitor (new system), I find that most Web pages
load with fixed width and do not change when the window is resized, leaving
blank margins on both sides.

Have reviewed the various options but haven't found one pertinent to Web
page size display. What am I overlooking?
 
Well, as a web designer (of sorts), I have found that
since most people set their browsers at 800x600, most
webpages are designed with those parameters in mind. The
pages you are viewing may be locked to a 600 pixel width
and there may not be anything you can do to 'stretch' them
to the sides of your screen. Sorry. You could try and View
Source and see if the pages in question are fixed to the
600 pixel width...
