I want to number my pages starting from page 4 in my document but I want to
begin with number one. I also want to have the page number in the bottom
right corner of the page but I dont want the text to be so close to the edge
of the page. Need help with this. thanks!

Insert a section break at the end of page 3 and break the link between the
header footer of the two sections. Worrking in the sectuion 2 footer, put a
right aligned tab at the place where you want the right side of the page
number to appear and/or set a negative right indent in the paragraph style
paragraph format of the paragraph you use to format the footer. Insert a
page field tabbed to your right tab. You can set the page start number from
the header/footer toolbar (Word 2003) or from the Page Number button on the
HeaderFooter Tools tab (Word 2007)

In addition to what Graham has said, you can adjust the footer margin to
determine the distance from the bottom of the page or adjust the tab setting
to increase the distance from the right side.
