Page File Size Question

My XP system recommends a page file setting of 4605 for a 3.00 GB of ram. But
when I enter that amount it prompts me to enter a number lower than 4096.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

There is no set amount for the page file size you need. It all depends
on the apps you run. In general the more memory you have the less need
there is for a page file, but one is still needed. See this link for
info on virtual memory in XP and how to set the page file. There is a
utility there which shows page file use. Use that to get a feel for how
much you use. Lower usage means you can set the page file lower.

Awesome. Thanks for your help.

Your answer clearly points Zack in the right direction.

However, the recommendation is the default 1.5 x ram. I would imagine
4,096 is the available disk space. Is my supposition likely to be right?

I wonder what % of the partition / drive free disk space will represent
after setting a page file size. Is there a secondary issue on Zach's
machine?

I think his numbers sound about right 1 GB is 1024 MB x 3 x 1.5 = 4608
MB. I don't think there is necesarily a problem with his machine.

Well my XP has been pretty flaky lately. I do have two 250GB hard disks and I
started using a page file on my d: drive and left the 2-50mb space on the c:

I just thought I should be able to get my page file to at least the XP
recommended size which it will not do.

I have a Dell XPS by the way.

Zack

Are the hard drives partitioned?

If you read that link I posted about virtual memory, you'll now see that
the 1.5x which was a rule of thumb in previous versions of the windows
OS does not really apply in XP. In fact with XP's memory handling the
more ram in the system the less you need a page file so as the ram
amount gets large, as you have, then it's overkill. Use that utility to
track your page file use to see what is actually being used based on
your computing habits to determine how much is actually needed.

I wasn't reading the posts very clearly when I responded the last time.
I see your point now. Yes, it's not clear why it won't let him choose
that size. To the OP: are any Norton products installed?

No norton products. My AV is NOD32, no partitions.

It ran fine for a the first many months then I got a malware that kept
popping windows up every minute. I fought with that using hijackthis and
finally got rid of it but it has been glitchy since. It starts slow, does not
load the system tray until I log off and back on. Occassionally I get a blue
screen.

The easy one but I doubt it will have any impact on your main problem:

For Event ID: 1517 download and install the User Profile
Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://snipurl.com/5b61

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

It can speed up Shutdown.

The cCleaner and the Explorer error record the same fault address.

I am not sure what this means. I will try to find out.

That's a common issue and not very problematic other than slowing down
logoff or restart/shudown. To take care of it install the User Profile
Hive Cleanup service, Uphclean:
