I have 256 MB physical RAM, as your given formula says
page file size will 512. But Sysytem Properties->
Performance Options-> virtual memory window says
Recommended: 382 MB.
What do you say now?
Asif, the last thing you should go by is the Windows recommendation.
The thing about pagefile setup is that the rules for an optimal
configuration are far from straightforward. However, the only thing
that almost everyone agrees on is that max should equal min to avoid
fragmentation.
There used to be a standard rec of RAM x 2. Some people say RAM x 1.5
(which is what Windows is asking you to do). MS used to say RAM + 12.
Actually, that last one should be the minimum you work with, unless you
have more than 4084MG RAM.
The actual amount you need totally depends on your usage. You should
start w/ RAM x 2 and run perfmon against pagefile usage during a month
of typical use and see what your peak usage is during that time. You
can then adjust up or down from that starting point. If you can afford
it, you'd want to give yourself at least 25-33% breathing room over your
observed peak.
