Page file growing out of control

I rcently noticed my internet connection showed a lot of activity (both
sending and receiving) even though i had no web pages open and was not
downloading. I closed my
internet connection (through a Belkin wireless adsl router) but my computer
slowed down and eventually shut down my anti-virus and firewall due to "low
on virtual
memory" I rebooted and opened task manager and noticed the when my internet
connection was open the page fille was about 180 - 240mb but when i closed my
internet connection the CPU usage immediately soared to 100% for about 15
seconds then it dropped to under 10% but at the same time the page file
useage
began to slowly rise. It eventually reach 1.96gb and at that point stopped
rising. As soon as 1.96gb was reached the CPU usage immediately rose to 100%
and stayed that way. By this time a lot of my running programs such as AVG
anti-virus and Zone Alarm Pro had shut down. I'm running daily updated AVG
Free, Ad-Aware Professional and Edwido Guard. Convinced i had a virus or
trojan I scanned
with all of these and found nothing wrong. I then downloaded the latest
version of Stinger which also found no problems. To cover all angles I also
ran the online Panda Antivirus check which again found no problems.I have now
re-formatted and reinstalled windows (with all updates) and my other programs
and still the problem persists. As long as i keep my internet connection open
the page file stays at about 200 - 250mb but opening web pages slower than
normal.

I am using XP pro with 512 mb memory. I have made various changes to the
Page file icluding setting it at 1.5x my ram memory but this made no
diffrence so i have now reverted to letting windows manage the page file, but
the problem still persists.

Can anyone help please

Perhaps you can help. I can't even change my page file size. I go through
the instructions over and over and still no joy. I am administrator of my
computer, am not networked. etc. I have 512 mb ram. Does small page file
size slow down one's computer? Everything loads so slowly.

Thank for any help.
