.pab file is missing

Cathy Josey

My mother board and processor fried the other day (ran on
Win98), but the hard drive was fine. I got a new machine
(WinXP) and reinstalled Outlook (MS Office XP). I also had
my old harddrive installed as a second drive. But, when I
went to import my .pab file, I could not find it anywhere
on my old hard drive. A search for *.pab or mailbox.pab,
or .pab turned up nothing.

I found the .pst file fine...and was able to import my
folders and old emails. But my old hard drive simply does
not have a .pab file on it. My address book was working
perfectly before, so I assuem there had to have been
a .pab file.

Anyone ever run into this problem before? Is the
address/contact file on my computer, maybe under some
other file extension?

Please help...

Outlook hasn't used a PAB for over 5 years.
Are you sure you were?

Outlook does not use a separate file for an address book. There is nothing
more to import. Everything is stored in the Contacts Folder. You simply need
to configure your Outlook Address Book.
Go to Tools | E-mail accounts. Select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep
clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box, and go back to the
Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier. Once the OAB appears
in the list, select it and then click Change to make sure the Contacts
folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them aren't listed,
you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as
Outlook Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties,
clicking the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as
an E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making
these changes.

No, I'm not sure. I only know that my contact / address
book was working properly before this, so there IS a file
somewhere. However, when I try to do that import, I am
unable to locate ANY file on my old hard drive that seems
to be the address book file. I have looked for .pab and
also .wab and have not located it.
