P4S333 motherboard second IDE channel dead?

A Little Bit

The second IDE channel on my 2 year old P4S333 M/B seems to be knackered. It
just brings up gibberish when attempting to identify any hard drive or CD ROM
drive plugged into it. The primary IDE channel works fine.

Any easy fixes for this, or must I send it back to Asus?

It seems premature to blame the mobo. Why not suspect the drive or cable.
What shows up in bios and device manager?
