P4P800 mobo Issue

P

PentUpRage

I really need some help with this one.

I have an ASUS P4P800 mobo which currently has an 80GB WesternDigital
HD that is connected to it and is almost full, so I decided to
purchase a Seagate 250GB to compensate for the data. While installing
I first tried both drives on Cable Select to allow the IDE Cable to do
the work and when I powered the computer on, it will only stay active
for approx. 7 sec. (varies everytime the power is cycled), then shuts
itself off and tries to reboot. It will not even make it to the BIOS
Splash screen.

I have tried using the 80GB drive as a master and the 250GB drive as a
slave and still receive the same result. I have also tried using
different IDE cables and different HD’s to use with the 80GB
WesternDigital and still get the same result.

I honestly am at a loss for what to do now. I have burned out an AGP
Nvidia Card already from the power cycles and I do not want to burn
out the new one that I just bought. Also now when I plug in only one
drive now, it occasionally will do the same thing or I will receive an
Overclocking failed error, even though I am not overclocking the
motherboard.

I’ve been using this board for a year now and not had any problems
until now. Please advise me because I’m tired of beating my head
against a brick wall.

THANX!!!

Sounds like a weak power supply to me.

Have you ever tried to use the BIOS hardware monitor, or
Asus Probe, to verify the power supply voltages ? What
do they read ?

Have you gone back to where you started? just the 80gb drive?
I think it is a power problem.

The power supply is 400 Watts. I am running a DVD/RW, CD/RW, Floppy,
and AGP card besides the two drives. Also I have gone back to just
one drive and it works sometimes. Other times I get the same error as
when I have two drives, but not as often.

Also I have actually unplugged everything except for the two drives
and the AGP and I still get the same error.

Sounds like your power supply is on the way out (especially with your
graphics card having fried too).
Try borrowing a power supply to see if all is OK with just the 80 Gb drive.
Also suspect the 250 Gb disk could have a problem and draws too much
current.

o.k. I’ll try that and see if it works. Do you think that 400W is
enough or should I try to get one that is more powerful?

Thanx,

Thanx,

Normally a "good" 400W should be OK, but if the 450 isn't too much more go
for it....
Try for one of the better makes Antec, Enermax etc.

I would say the same thing, your power supply is on the way out.

Remember 400 watts is not 400 watts.

Look at your power supply ratings and the current that can be supply
at each voltage there is then look at one that is say 100-150 bucks
and see how much better those ratings are.

This is a $39 CDN supply.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=876412&Sku=ULT31558

AC INPUT 115V/230V 10A/6A 60/50Hz
DC OUTPUT +3.3V +5V +12V -12V -5V +5VSB
500W Max Combined Watts 28A 30A 34A 0.8A 0.3A 2A

Here is a $108CDN supply

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1337306&CatId=0

AC INPUT 115V/230V - 60/50Hz
DC OUTPUT +3.3V +5V +12V -12V -5V +5VSB
500W Max Combined Watts 32A 42A 30A 0.8A 0.5A 2.5A

You could be or have already overloaded one of these voltages.

I have a P4P800 SE and I had a used case with a 400 watt supply in it
and a couple of the voltages where under the rated voltage.

Ya it ran but didn't seem right, I finally got around to a new case
and it came with a new 400 watt supply and everything runs much better
and all voltages are slightly over there ratings except for the 3.3
which drops once in awhile to 2.296, and things seem to be much
better.

Asus P4P800 SE
P4-2.4 GHz
Matrox G550 DUAL HEAD video
LG dvd Dual layer
Plextor 12/10/32
IDE\DISKMAXTOR_6L060J3
IDE\DISKWDC_WD1200JB
2 512 stick PC400

I am planning to install my ata100 PCI controller card with a 40gig
maxtor drive
And a SCSI card with some kind of SCSI drive, not sure what size yet.
