P4G800-V Problem w/ 2 SATA drives at Ultra DMA Mode 5

Greg

I just bought the P4G800-V motherboard last week and am trying to decide
whether or not to return it. I have two SATA hard drives hooked up (WD
Raptor 36.7GB & Seagate Barracuda 80GB) and both are stuck in DMA Mode 5
instead of 6. It not only shows up as Mode 5 in Windows XP Professional
SP1, but also when I boot the computer. I've tried manually setting it to
DMA Mode 6 in the BIOS but it didn't make any difference.

Anyone know what the problem is? I'd like to keep the motherboard but if
it's not working properly then nows the time for me to get rid of it.

Thanks

Looking at the motherboard specs ( http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4G800-V&langs=01 ) I see that it only
supports up to DMA Mode 5 (ATA100), and beat me over the head with a dead squirrel if I'm wrong, but the SATA
interface is entirely seperate from the PIO/UDMA stuff that is part of the ATA standard anyway, or so I
thought.

Tony.

I was just noticing that in the manual. The BIOS does list UDMA 6 as an
option. The book doesn't. I don't know it makes any difference or not with
SATA. I need to buy a motherboard for a system I'm building this week so
I'll just buy a different one (one that supports mode 6) and use it instead.

Greg ... I can't answer the question about the motherboard capabilities, but
as far as displaying UDMA 5 in WinXP, that's as high as XP will display.
The WinXP Service Pack 2, due out later this year, will be able to display
the higher modes.

As far as if the mobo is capable of mode 6, that's another story.
