P4C800E-DELUXE: PROMISE FASTTRACK 378 RAID1 creation problems

Hi everybody,

I'm running a machine with P4C800E-DELUXE (BIOS v1017) and Promise
Fasttrack (driver v1.00.37) with one single Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 -
SATA - 120 Gb - 8Mb Cache, windows XP SP2, latest drivers .... Until
here everything is OK for more than 6 months ;-))

Nevertheless, I want to setup a RAID 1 for security reasons, so I
bought the same hard disk in order to create a RAID 1 array with
Fastrack 378 chipset. I konw that ICH5R (intel) can nowadays deal with
RAID 1, but it cannot duplicate an existing disk like Promise utility
(Am I wrong ?)

I set up the BIOS so when I boot, Fasttrack is activated and then I
can enter in FastBuild tool in order to create my array. I choose the
creation of a RAID 1 array with option "Create and duplicate" (since I
have my exsting drive which I do not want (for the moment...) format
and set up a RAID 1 before winXP install), then it begins to duplicate
existing drive: IT STOPS AT 2% and I do not have any idea about the
problems ....

I tested the second new disk on another PC, I can format it and then
use it without any problems.

Does someone ever experienced such a problem ?

In the same idea, I installed the Promise Array MAnagement tool (PAM)
which is a representation of my defectuous array. There is a Delete
Option that I doubt about !!!! What is going to happen if I click on
it: will only the RAID structure be deleted or will the partitions on
both disks be destroyed ?

Thank you advacnce for any help ;-))

I am currently running a P4 1.6GHz CPU, which is much too slow. I would like
to upgrade to a 3.2, 3.4, or even a 3.6. However, I already have 4GB PC2100
DDR and don't want to change the ram at this point. Can I still run a
3.2/3.4/3.6 in my machine?

Yes, you can. Table 2 in the manual shows a line where a FSB800
processor can be mixed with PC2100 memory. The memory runs at
DDR266, no problem. With the cost of RAM, I can understand why
you want to do this.

I would also like to change just one component at a time. A faster CPU is
very cost effective, particularly since I am running a 1.6, and my other
components are pretty fast. I am willing to take a hit on the memory speed,
at least for now. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.
