P4, Intel standard HSF removal

Starting to replace the thermal grease with Arctic Silver Ceramique I
found that I cannot remove the HSF. After releasing the retention
levers there is some movement, but that's all.
Can I please have a pointer on how to proceed?( P4 Northwood 2.4 G)

Use the system for an hour so that the HS is warm.Then shutdown.You
should find that it's easy get the Hs off then.however there's
nothing,"Magical" about,"Arctic Silver" and if you have to use that
then you haven't got your normal cooling correct IMHO.

But if it has the stock thermal pad, any thermal grease is going to be an
improvement. My temps dropped a bunch when I replaced the pad with some RS
thermal grease. I agree there is nothing magical about "artic silver" but
it is better than a pad.

I agree.I didn't mean to say not to use any thermal paste and those
thermal pads are crappy.

Thank you both for the replies. As it is, I cannot get the fan or the
Heatsink off and I do not weish to remove the Mobo from the case.
Are there some plastic lugs or somethingswhich have to be depressed?

Oh now I know what you are talking about. Yes there are plastic "hooks" that
hook onto the retention piece made on the Mobo. The easiest way to deal
with it is take a flat head screwdriver between the leg of the clamp and
the retention device on the mobo while lifting slightly. If you look at the
pictures of them installing the HSF here, you'll understand what "hooks"
I'm talking about and where you need to pry. Just don't bend the platic
legs any more than you have to.

There can be a good amount of surface tension developed between the cpu
and heatsink, the problem with the P4 s478 setup is that it doesn't
allow you to "slide" the heatsink to break this bond, due to the
retention bracket. I have a mainboard that has ALWAYS pulled the CPU
right out of the socket when the heatsink is removed; so far I haven't
lost any pins, but it's irritating.

Your reply was exactly what I needed, but I was hesitant to experiment
since I had read that some people had managed to break parts of the
plastic frame off etc..
I am "ok" now, and thanks again.

Don't worry, if you break the clips. You can get those heatsinks for $5...
