P2B problem installing HD & booting up from floppy/cd

Because my 10 GB harddisk crashed, I bought a new one (WD 80 GB) and
tried to install it in my system. My motherboard (asus P2B) didn't
recognize harddisks bigger then 32Gb, so I flashed my BIOS with
succes. Now with the harddisks set to auto in the standard CMOS setup
the HD is recognized at starting up as primary master (and my cd-rom
as sencondary master). But with the auto-detect harddisk option in my
BIOS the harddisk is not recognized and the system hangs.

My real problem now is that I cannot install an operating system.
Apparently the harddisk is recognized (altough not by the auto-detect
in the BIOS) at startup. But my system is only booting from
cd-rom/floppy when in the CMOS setup the harddisk is disabled. With
the harddrive enabled, the system skips the boot sequence from
cdrom/floppy drive (the boot sequence is configured correctly in the
BIOS). When booting without harddisk, i can boot from cd-rom or
floppy. The operating system recognizes also the harddisk, but
afterwards i cannot startup with the harddisk...

Has somebody an idea what could be a possible solution?

So you're saying that the new 80gb hard drive is set to primary and
active and it is NOT being recognised in the BIOS by the auto-detect?
Are the jumpers correctly set for master?

Are you trying to boot from the the CD-Rom first or the hard drive? I
am having a hard time understanding what you are saying.

If the hd is not recognised by the BIOS, I don't think it is gonna be
able to do anything,. Check all cables (IDE - correct orientation of
red stripe and power cable) and jumpers. For me first step is always
the auto-detect, or else nothing can happen.

Ignore the "Auto-Detect" setting in the BIOS.

If the drive is detected on the POST cycle like you say it is, then that's
all you should need to worry about at BIOS level - the drive should be setup
with the operating system.

I just wondered about the disk not being recognized by the BIOS. But
my problem still exists. It's indeed being recognized in the POST
cycle, but i still can't install an operating system. The point is
that if the harddisk is enabled, i cannot boot from my floppy or
cd-rom drive. If I disable the harddrive in the BIOS, booting from
cd-rom / floppy is no problem at all. But if i then set-up an
operating system and after that enabling the harddisk in the BIOS it
still does not get any further after booting (like it's an empty
harddrive). It's correctly connected. Maybe you've got an idea what's
going wrong (i probably missed something). Thanks!

Could it be you haven't flashed the latest 1014 beta 3 BIOS but the
older 1012 (which still has the 64 GiB bug)?
