Ownership by Multiple Users

We shall be glad to have some input on this issue:

On one PC that dual boots - Windows XP Media Center Edition and Windows XP
Professional (both SP2) - there are three users. All three use Windows XP
Pro while MCE is used by two.

Acronis True Image is installed for all users on this machine. Each user has
the ability to create a disk image. Sometime there is the need to access a
stored image to check some old files.

It has been found that images created by one user cannot be accessed at all
by any of the others. The Security tab shows no entry at all on the image
file. This is the only type of file that does not show any allowed user on
this computer.

How can we add users (not take ownership, which fails for the Acronis
images) to such files - or for that matter, to any file on a computer that
has no users visible at all? The tips offered by Windows Help & Support
("add user to file") does not work as the Details button is greyed out on
the Advanced button in the General tab on Properties for those files.

Acronis itself does not specify anywhere on accessibility to images it
creates by different users on one single computer.

We temporarily installed Norton Ghost 2003, but its image files show exactly
the same behavior! Again, only for those image files! There are lots of
other documents and multimedia files on this particular PC - we have no
problems, no matter which OS is booted into or which user is logged in.

Only when any particular image's creator logs in can the file be accessed.
Again, if user X created an image file X while logged onto WinXP Pro, that
user now cannot access his own file if he logs in while booting the PC with
WinXP MCE!

I have lost at least 5 percent of the foliage on my scalp trying to even
figure this out. I realize this could be all solved just by having one user
create the back-ups and access them but its not possible in this case.

The issue has been resolved acting on local advice.

Turned out that all that needed to be done was to select Advanced on the
Security tab in Properties of the PC's drives one by one and then select
Replace Permission Entries........... and select OK. But before this, all
the users were added with full rights in the main window of the Security
tab. This now made the files accessible to all users without any problems.

The above was done while logged on as Administrator.
