WinXP/SP2 cannot access folder without access denied message. Folder
attributes OK.
I saw a program recently here that did this but can't find it. Anyone
help please?

Thanks mate...unfortunately it couldn't unlock/delete this folder, even
on reboot! Any other suggestions?

Julian,

If you want to delete the folder or files inside, I have had luck with
the following method.

Reboot in safe mode with command prompt.

Navigate to the folder/files and rename it. (You still cannot delete
it, but you can often rename it)

Reboot in normal mode and delete the renamed item.

Hope this works for youBill

I also found that, sometimes, copying a small file, any file, to the
file you want but can't delete, works. Once done with the copying, the
new file can often be deleted.

Yes, here is a similar freeware program, which should work. It's
called Delete Doctor; you indicate the file or files you want to
delete, and when you reboot, they get deleted before Windows loads
fully. http://www.diskcleaners.com/.

Jules,

Some people have had luck with Gibin Software's MoveOnBoot:

Ron :)
Thanks for your help fellows, but these programs only work on files. I
have a FOLDER that has locked me out. Anyone else know a way to
access/remove this folder?

TIA

run regedit and search for the folder's name. See, if there's some entry
pointing to what's using it or what's inside.
Sometimes I'm successful with "Eraser" rather than deleting it.
Have you tried killing processes one by one? Sorry, I couldn't read all the
posts.
Good luck

Hello Jules,

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or a folder
where you have been denied access.

If you must access a file or a folder that you do not have access to,
you must take ownership of that file or folder. When you do this, you
replace the security permissions to have access.

Clif you are an absolute wonder! Thank you for such a complete and
successful answer. All folders/files now back on line. It's also nice to
be able to use the correct Windows solution.

Hi Julian,

You are very welcome. It just so happens I've run into that problem
before. I think this happens when you re-install XP over the top of an
earlier installation of XP. Old files and folders are left behind and
the system doesn't recognize them as belonging to the administrator.
Fortunately MS gives you a good description of what to do about it.

Have fun!

figure out who's who though. :-)

Ok I have this same problem, but I didn't get in on the answer to it. Where
do I go? What do I do?

OK all permissions are correct. I still get a little red circle with a white
x in it that says access denied.
