Outlook XP cannot log on to server (SMTP)

Todd

Windows Small Business Server 2000 AD domain with four
client workstations uses a second NIC to connect to DSL
modem for shared internet access. All workstations are
running fully patched Windows XP Pro SP1 with Office XP
SP2.

Two workstations can access pop mail (send and receive)
with full functionality for any account tested. Two
workstations cannot successfully complete "Test Settings"
in account setup or send email. Error message is along
the lines of "can not log on to server (SMTP)".

Believing that there must be a problem that I could not
locate on the two troubled machines I rebuilt one of them
only to receive the same error.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated. The users
are currently using the ISPs web mail interface as a work-
around.

Have you tried disabling your firewall? Also note that there is a built-in
firewall on the network adapter itself in Windows XP. Choose for the tab
Advanced on the properties of the NIC.
If this works review your firewall settings.

Hope this helps!
