TOOLS > SEND/RECEIVE > SEND/RECEIVE SETTINGS > DEFINE SEND/RECEIVE GROUPS >
Click the EDIT button on the right side.
That's where you tell it what to do when it checks the server for mail.

We found that the Windows firewall does not automatically enter an
exception for outlook.exe. Once we added it, mail flowed without the
necessity of clicking send/receive. Hope this helps.

WHAT IS THIS EXCEPTION? - HOW DO YOU "ADD"
IT??

OK, I FOUND THE WINDOWS FIREWALL PLACE, IT SAYS IT IT TURNED OFF, THERE IS A
LONG LIST OF STUFF UNDER EXCEPTIONS, I ADDED OUTLOOK TO THE LIST, DOES THIS
FIREWALL OPTION "HAVE" TO BE TURNED ON?

Please turn off your Caps Lock key. Posting in all caps is considered
shouting.

No, the Windows firewall doesn't need to be turned on, but you should have
_some_ firewall protecting you. If you're a home user, you should use
either the Windows firewall or an add-in firewall like Zone Alarm. In a
corporate environment, the company most likely has one in place for the
entire network.

If the firewall was off, then there's no need to add Outlok to its
exceptions list.

If Outlook won't send or receive unless you click Send/Receive, then, while
viewing your Inbox, press Alt-Ctrl-S and examine the "Schedul an automatic
send/receive every" values. Specify a value of, say, 10 minutes. It
shouldn't' be anything less than about 10 minutes.

I have been struggling with the same issue and I just figured it out! In
the lower right corner of my inbox window I found a drop down menu where I
had checked "work offline" When I unchecked that box, it solved the problem.
Hope this helps.
