Hello to All -

Helping a friend with his Windows XP system, Outlook 2003. Using Word as the
e-mail editor.

When the computer first boots, he can open Outlook normally. However, when
he closes Outlook and then later tries to open it again it will not open.
The Processes list in Task Manager then shows 2 instances (or more) of
OUTLOOK.EXE running, along with 1 instance of WINWORD.EXE. If we close these
out we can then open Outlook with no problems.

Thanks,
John Murray

Does the user have any Outlook addins installed? One of them might be
causing Outlook to not exit

Hello Vince -- thanks for the reply. No, there are no add-ins installed.
This is a very typical installation, nothing out of the ordinary.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

Thanks, Milly -

I appreciate your reply -- nothing has changed to cause this problem to
start occurring:

1. No PDA
2. No WinFax
3. No Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. No Add-ins
5. No mail reminder add-ins; just Calendar
6. AVG antivirus from Grisoft has been on this machine for over 1 year

I looked through SlipStick before posting here, it is the BEST resource
around for Outlook & Exchange, just outstanding.
Microsoft says this problem occurs when there is a removable drive with no
disc inserted, but there is no removable drive on this machine.

Thanks again,
John Murray

What happens if you close the anti virus scanning. You will still be protected.

Hi Peter -- thank you for the reply. This problem turns out to be a common
one, and we went with this add-in:
