outlook vs outlook express - question for MS

Tab Rasa

Hi

I am just wondering why microsoft would provide a free product (Outlook
Express) which makes reading newsgroups and viewing email image attachments
so easy and straightforward ... and yet produce an expensive product
(Outlook) which you can't.

I do understand that Outlook will open express to view Newsgroups ... and I
do understand that Outlook is designed for business users (who don't work
with graphics!) and to be networkable and interoperable with the other
office products (and it has a pretty calendar etc etc) - but still ... it
does not leave many Microsoft options for other users .. particularly with
MS abandoning Outlook Express.

Anyway - I'm just curious ... why remove the advantages of free outlook
express in the costly outlook?

First of all; Microsoft isn't abondoning Outlook Express it just stopped
major development on it. This means that when a new version of Outlook
Express comes out it wouldn't be having lots of new features.

This automatically answers your question; "why remove the advantages of free
outlook express in the costly outlook?" It's not!
The main reason that there isn't a newsreader in Outlook is because there is
already a "free" newsreader in Outlook Express.
Also in corporate environments that require newsgroup access configure NNTP
on the Exchange server so people can easily access the newsgroups from
within Outlook through Public Folders.

I hope this answers all your questions.

Regards,

Thanks Roady

I wasn't aware that there had been a change of heart ... but have since
confirmed that you are right - thanks :) that's a relief!

The other question is was - why exactly does Outlook Express give users the
option to view non-html attachments inline and Outlook does not give the
user any option. You simply can't! (Unless you load P_Lee's macro).

I guess it sort of does not make sense to me that you need both ... and that
Outlook does not replace Outlook Express entirely and with more options.

I just think it's silly that Outlook needs users to open the "microsoft
picture and fax viewer" when you want to view email attachments and fire up
something like "freeagent" to email a reply such as this.

There is no picture preview in Outlook indeed. This is to create an even
more secure environment; no automatic execution of any type of attachments.
Outlook displays the message the way it has been sent; if the pictures are
included by Insert-> Picture... the picture is displayed in-line. If the
picture is included as an attachment by Insert-> File... it will show up as
attachment. If the picture is actually a link to a weblocation the picture
is blocked to ensure your privacy.

The target of Outlook is not to replace Outlook Express. These programs can
coexist very nicely. Including the same newsreader into Outlook as there is
in Outlook Express doesn't make any sense. Using already available
technology eases administration as well. The same is true for e.g MSN
Messenger. When you are running Windows XP with Windows Messenger you'll
also have Remote assistance available in MSN Messenger. People who do not
have Windows XP will not have this option available in MSN Messenger.

Thanks Roady - we might have to agree to disagree as to user friendliness :)
I more than understand everyone has different requirements.

I'm happy with the task & calendar with outlook - but will stick with
express for email and news. (Now .. if only OE and Outlook Calendar could
work together!!).

As for MSN Messenger versus Windows Messenger - I don't really need remote
assistance (except to understand logic behind software design ;-) ). I had
to install MSN Messenger and uninstall Windows Messenger because I could not
see the latest MSN Messenger emoticons my friends were sending me (they
weren't available for Windows Messenger).

thanks

You're welcome! :)

For the Calendar in OE you might want to check the Outlook Express newsgroup
on what your options for this are;

Just a note; Windows Messenger en MSN Messenger are products that can very
well coexist on the same machine as well. Uninstalling Windows Messenger is
not even recommended practise
