Outlook versus Outlook Express

Is Outlook inherently more secure than Outlook Express? I understand the
fact that it has more business applications (i.e. calendar) and does not
have a newsreader (although OE's may substitute) but wondered about it
in terms of securing it to a greater degree. Thank you.

For internet features Outlook is based on Outlook Express. Lucky OE got OL's name and OL stole OE's code. OE's real name is Microsoft Internet Mail And News and is a a couple of years older than OL (which for it's non internet features come from Microsoft Mail and Schedule +).

Both have had problems with security but with the latest patches
should be "reasonably" secure. As for Outlook being more secure than
OE, I believe they're the same. You might want to consider
downloading Mozilla (the full download) since it has an E-Mail client
plus a very good (secure) browser.
