Outlook unable to find domain after XP recovery installation

Hi there,

I've just been having a nightmare with an Windows XP / Outlook XP
problem. It's all sorted but I just thought I'd pass the details on
in case it might help someone else at some point.

Firstly I was installing XP service pack one and the machine ran out
of memory half way through the install. On retrying the windowsupdate
it kept getting stuck and when I rebooted the PC it wouldn't boot
(nasty blue screens and memory dump errors). I spent a while
wondering whether I could do anything with the XP recovery console,
but then managed to find the recovery installation again (of course
you have to choose the normal installation, and use "F8" to accept the
terms and conditions before you get the option). I opted to use a
workgroup rather than the domain during the re-installation but
Windows picked up the old domain settings anyway.

That sorted everything except Outlook which wouldn't log onto the
domain/exchange server. Having removed the Outlook account and tried
to re-add it (on the client machine) the "check name" button just
produced the logon prompt (asking for username, password and domain,
even though the user was already logged into the domain). If the
correct details were entered the message "Your logon information was
incorrect. Check your username and domain, then type your password
again. If your account is new or if your administrator requested a
password change you need to click Change Password then logon with your
new password." came up.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook from the Office XP CD.
No difference

I checked and double checked the TCP/IP, DNS and WINS settings.
No difference

I reset the TCP/IP using netshell, which is apparently the same as
uninstalling/reinstalling TCP/IP (KB article 299357):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=299357
No difference

I removed the PC from the domain by putting it back into a Workgroup
and then put it back into the domain.
No difference

In the end I found Dave Collar's post ("Outlook XP: unable to logon to
exchange server. OWA is ok") which mentions Knowledge Base article
321652 which specifies the required registry values required for
Outlook to authenticate itself on the NT domain. I put four new
values in one key and it's fine. Why XP had deleted them I don't
know. Why reinstalling Outlook couldn't put them back I don't know.
But they're there now and it works. Until next time.

So thanks Dave and I hope that is of some use to someone.
