Actually, Outlook 98 was available as a free web download for maybe a year or so.

But didn't you need to have Outlook 97 already? I thought the OL 98
download was an upgrade to OL 97.

Nope. Apparently, Outlook 97 was so deficient in some areas that Outlook 98 was offered free as a way to win back users (and win new ones).

1970?!?!!?!?!? More like 1997.

Outlook had the PIM and sharing features of Schedule+ and it replaced the
MS Exchange Client as the MAPI client for MS Exchange Server. Within a year,
Outlook Express was bundled with IE 4.0 and replaced the Windows 95 "Exchange
In-Box". Outlook Express 4.0 was used with early versions of MSN and MSN
REQUIRED A PAID SUBSCRIPTION then as it does now! When it came out Outlook97
(specifically Outlook 8.0) could be used as a POP3 client for MSN (until it
ate every thing on your machine) until Outlook 98. After acquiring Hotmail,
MS released MSN6 which converted the POP3 accounts to the Hotmail HTML
backend breaking the usability of Outlook98 and OE as MSN clients. Outlook
2000 was the first version of Outlook to use web-based email servers such as
hotmail.
