I would like to have some way to use Outlook in the following way -
preferably without going over to Exchange Server.

An inbox which can be accessed/shared between 5 users.
Sent mail grouped together in a shared folder accessible for the 5 users- so
that any of those users can see all the thread of the email and replies in a
sort of shared sent box.
Can this be done using Outlook 2003/2007 POP mail and if so how pls ?

Hi keevill,

you could try this "shared inbox" with an IMAP account:

"Setting up Outlook for use with IMAP"
http://web.mit.edu/is/products/outlook/imapconfigoutlook.html

The "limitation" is, that this "sharing function" is not a "live" solution.
If one of your coworker sent an email, this "sent item" is not updated
"live"in the shared folder.

Another software which support this function is our software "Public
ShareFolder":
http://www.publicshareware.com/public-share-outlook-description.html

"How to send and recieve emails in a Public Folders with Public
ShareFolder?"

Hi Kevill,
Do I really need to use Exchange Server??

On "slipstick" is a list with nearly 40 "sharing" solutions without Exchange
server. Most of them "synchronize" the items and do not share them, but they
are listed as "sharing" solution.

Did you visited the slipstick website?
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm

If you use IMAP, you do not need an Exchange Server.

If you would use "Public ShareFolder" you do not need an Exchange Server.

The products on "Microsoft Office Marketplace":
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/CE010719621033.aspx

also work without Exchange Server.

Did you visited this sites and did you try/test one or more of this
"Exchange Alternatives"?

So my answer is:
Do I really need to use Exchange Server??
No.

Is this the best alternative overall ?

For me, our software is the best alternative, but my answer is not
"independent". ;-)

Maybe it helps.
