Outlook Send and receive takes forever

Just recently my outlook 2002 has slowed to a crawl. I get 100% disc
activity and to download a tiny email <10kb takes 5 - 10 minutes each.
(with the amount of spam about this will turn into an impossible task)

I have tried deleting all other resources but nothing seems to improve
things.
I have compacted the pst file it is now about 47mb and the archive is
about 120mb

Anyone any ideas please

If you are using a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook disable this
integration and try again.
