Outlook 2000 has been working fine pulling 5 to 15 messages a day from
comcast.net. Yesterday it started receiving email, deleting it from the mail
server but not displaying it in the inbox.

Do you have a filter on your view? View > Current View. Make sure Messages is
checked rather than anything else.

Hi Kathleen,

I have had exactly the same problem for well over a year - it occurs
intermittently for a few days and then clears up.

Messages from certain senders (which are trusted) are immediately deleted
upon download: I hear the new mail alert; can see the header in the inbox for
a fraction of a second, then it disappears, and cannot be seen in junk or
deleted.

I cannot see any common pattern in either the senders or the messages that
are deleted. Others get through OK.

And the senders that are involved change from occurrence to occurrence, too.

This happens even with all junk filtering turned off. I have all the
recommended updates, and no rules turned on that involve deletion of messages.

Tearing my hair out over this as I can’t find anything on MSKB to help.

Hint for the OP: I have worked around this by saving messages on the mail
server for three days so I can use an online reader to check when I notice
that expected messages are not appearing. Without that, I would be completely
stuck! It is hardly an elegant solution though, and impossible to keep
properly in synch with Outlook, as forwarded copies from the web interface
are also deleted.

Have you tried opening Outlook with the /cleanviews switch?

Start > Run > outlook.exe /cleanviews <enter>

Often the result of an antivirus or -spam program integrating with Outlook.
It's not Outlook removing the item, but the add-in.

Hi Brian,

I'm sure that;s the case for some progams. I use AVG, which is supposed just
to move items to junk email. It isn't set to delete anything.

Brian is right about antivirus and/or antispam. Disable the integration with
Outlook and see if that improves the problem. Also clear out your views just
in case.

Thanks Kathleen. I have tried turning off the email scanner and anti-spam,
and that seems to have improved things. Now I'll turn one on and then the
other to see which is the culprit. I'll report back if I find anything
useful, as this may help other people too.

PS What do you mean by "clear out views" please? I currently have some
folders set not to use the reading pane (inbox, junk, deleted) and the rest
are all the same (nav/reading/header list).

Uninstall AVG and reinstall it without the mail scanning feature. If it
makes a difference, you found the problem. Scanning mail is never necessary
anyway and can lead to communications issues between Outlook and the server.

By cleaning your views, I mean to return them to default in case there are
any filters applied to what you see.

Close Outlook, then restart it using the following command:

Start > Run > outlook.exe /cleanviews

Thanks Brian - I followed your and Kathleen's advice, and am hoping it will
make a difference - fingers crossed!
