Outlook Personal Folders Backup problem

This feature does not seem to be working. It does not remind me to back up
and the backup window indicates that my last backup was 8/24/2008! I have it
configured to remind me every 7 days. The folders are checked in the Backup
Options window, I click Save Backup, it tells me it will backup when I close
Outlook, but then it doesn't happen!
Please help. Thank you.
I am running XP, Outlook 2007.

Actually I checked and it does seem to continue running even after I close
Outlook! I'm not sure what to do about that. Can you prompt me through it?

Its usually caused by a missbehaving addin (see Tools>Trust Centre within
Outlook) and or any antivirus software intergrated with outlook.
Also are you using a pst file created in an earlier version of Outlook?
 
How do I know which addin is missbehaving?
We use Avast for virus protection. I don't think it integrates with Outlook
(at least there wasn't anything in the initial configuration of the software
that indicated that was the case). You may know something I don't.
When I got a new computer I uploaded my Outlook 2003 to my new Outlook 2007,
so presumably I'm using that earlier file along with whatever has been
created in the 2007 version. I don't really understand how this all works! I
really appreciate your help here.

I am a little out of my league with this one! You taught me some things I
