Outlook not like it was after a reinstall.

Outlook is Different after Reinstall.

Before I slammed this box/computer, everything was running quite well. The
reason for the slam, the scanner, the computer though it was unavailable.
Not true, so that is why I slammed it. I am running Windows 2000 Pro. After
the slam, 42 updates and at least 10 required a reboot. Long day. But
otherwise it appears to be running quit well including the scanner.

There was a period of time when Internet Explorer wouldn't show certain
web-sites, yet it would show others. Can't recreate that one. Only happened
short time during two nights a week ago now.

I have been using Outlook '97, and though I had received several upgrades
over the past couple years. I even checked the Help, About, and that shows
what version, and I could swear it was at XP level, I do remember a 2002
level. The original Outlook setup came from the 'Microsoft Office 97
Professional Edition' that I purchased in '97. I went to Microsoft Web Site
to find any updates, but nothing for Outlook. Some for Office were
available.

Since the reinstall Outlook is nothing like it use to be.
1. Use to have a preview window. Not now.
2. Rules don't allow for more than one subject, or what ever you are
checking for. Wasn't like that in the past.
3. SpamBayes would check my incoming mail, and filter out the Spam. Not
any more.
4. I used Outlook Express as my Newsgroup Reader, and my mail would not
go into the Outlook Express' Inbox. That may have something to do with the
setup of Outlook Express.
5. I did manage to loose my Address Book, but I have all the e-mail
backed up, so I should be able to just add the sender to the Address Book.
Now it will not allow me to add anything. But it isn't anything like it was
before the slam.
6. The Tool Bar is nothing like it was before. Can't explain, except
there were buttons, I didn't have much customization, for checking for mail.
7. There was a button that would allow me to go straight to my Newsgroup
Reader, Outlook Express. Not available now.
8. In the past Outlook was very slow to come up. Word, Excel, and Access
were up in less than one second. No kidding. And I have see Outlook to take
over one minute before showing its banner. And still take more time before I
could do anything. Now it comes up in about 2 seconds. But it hasn't always
been like that. Since the slam, I have reinstalled three times at least.
Most within less than a week of each other.
9. Outlook used to allow HTML e-mail. Not now. Something I have to do is
double click on an icon, and they it ask me if I want to Save or Open It?
10. Now many of my e-mails are coming in as separate .txt files.
11. Outlook used to have settings for different text size, like large,
medium, or small. Not now.
12. Even when responding to the Newsgroups, the messages would be in
Outlook format and not Outlook Express.

Over all this is nothing remotely like I used to have. Absolutely nothing
like it is now. Even the icon is different now. I can't uninstall just
Outlook, But that is ok if something will clear this up.

What is wrong with this? How did I get upgrades then and not now? Or is
there some other kind of answer?

This is alot of information so lets see where we can start.

First what version and service pack are you running currently. If you are
running OL 97 definitely need to upgrade. Note Outlook 2002 and XP are the
same thing.

Have you ran a Detect and Repair on the your Outlook? Have you tried to
reinstall it. You can remove just Outlook as a component and then reinstall
it from the CD. You must have the CD.

Make sure that your system is completely updated as well as making sure the
system is clean of spyware and virus.

I would also try to use the command line switch \clean (Removes invalid
profile keys and recreates default registry keys where applicable).

To use switches, at the Start menu, Run command type:

Outlook /switch

Occasionally you'll need to use the full path to Outlook, so the command
line looks like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe " /switch
Note: Paths that include spaces between words must be enclosed in quotation
marks (") and are case sensitive.
You'll need the full path if you create desktop shortcuts

If this does not help try creating a brand new profile to see if it resolve
some of the issues.

There is alot to cover on your email so I am addressing the issue in the
larger sense as opposed to each individual item.

Regards,

Francine

Thanks Francine for you quick response.

Went to the web-site to get any upgrades, Microsoft said I didn't need any.
Go figure.

Yes several times.

Make sure that your system is completely updated as well as making sure the
system is clean of spyware and virus.

That has never been a problem. And I have check for any spyware and virus,
even got updates.

I would also try to use the command line switch \clean (Removes invalid

This part I don't know what you are refering to.

To use switches, at the Start menu, Run command type:

Outlook /switch

"Unable to display slected folder"

Occasionally you'll need to use the full path to Outlook, so the command
line looks like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe " /switch

Again the same answer, "Unable to display slected folder"

If this does not help try creating a brand new profile to see if it resolve
some of the issues.

Let me look into that one.

There is alot to cover on your email so I am addressing the issue in the

Thanks again.

These upgrades, if in fact that is what they were, I never keep the download
file. If I did, I have no way of knowing what the file names were.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Did you use the literal phrase "/switch" or did you use an actual command
line switch, like "/clean"

It didn't make any difference.
