Outlook not closing although disappearing

My Outlook from Office 2003 recently (past 2-3 weeks) started giving me
messages about not closing correctly. NOW, it closes from the desktop but
isn't leaving the tasks running. Yesterday I had to delete nearly 20 such
notations of the program running in the taskmgr although none were
displaying.

Any thoughts?

Forgot to mention this is a stand alone system...no business network
involved.

Do you have any addins or software/devices that access outlook data? That is
the usual cause of Outlook not closing.

That did the Trick, Thank you Diane. It was iTunes fouling up the
Outlook.

That was getting to be a real mess. Hope it works for our daughter too with
a similar problem only manifesting itself by failing to start on first call
to open Outlook.

Diane, Do you know what if any, business iTunes would have for an add-in
in Outlook 2003?

it's used for syncing appointments and contacts to ipod and iphone.
