Outlook is not Outlook Express - which do you want running in the
background? If Outlook, having the icon in the taskbar means that it is
running. Loading Outlook as a service does not work, it is either open or
closed.

After furious head scratching, anon asked:
| I've fiddled around with the hidden icon and cache, as MVP Milly
| suggested. Now the "new mail" icon displays near the clock, but I
| still have to close Outlook Express to get it out of the taskbar. I
| want OE to run in the background while I go about my business, and to
| make its presence known only by notifying me of new email. Have I
| been asking the wrong questions here? If not, how do I run Detect and
| Repair?

http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/mintotray.htm states that it
||||||| is the default
||||||| of Outlook 2003 to minimize in the notification section, near
||||||| the clock,
||||||| and
