Outlook minimizing to taskbar

neo [mvp outlook]

When Outlook is running, right click on the Outlook icon next to the clock
and select "hide when minimized".

The icon doesn't appear next to the clock. It's in the main part of the
taskbar. When I right click the icon, the options are Restore, Maximize, and
Close. Move, Size, and Minimize--the only other options that appear in the
box (window?)--are greyed out.

Then this either isn't Outlook 2003 or you have a corrupt installation.

Something's corrupted; it used to work. I may try reinstalling it. Thanks!

If your taskbar is set to hide inactive icons, look into its cache and see
if the Outlook Icon is one of them. Right click the start button, select
properties, then the taskbar tab.

If you're sure the icon isn't just hidden, I'd run Detect and Repair.
Reinstalling rarely solves anything.

I've fiddled around with the hidden icon and cache, as MVP Milly suggested.
Now the "new mail" icon displays near the clock, but I still have to close
Outlook Express to get it out of the taskbar. I want OE to run in the
background while I go about my business, and to make its presence known only
by notifying me of new email. Have I been asking the wrong questions here? If
not, how do I run Detect and Repair?

Outlook is not Outlook Express - which do you want running in the
background? If Outlook, having the icon in the taskbar means that it is
running. Loading Outlook as a service does not work, it is either open or
closed.
