Hello

Outlook 2003
XP Pro

Outlook constantly freezes up while consuming all the CPU usage. I reset
the profile but this did not make any difference.

Thanks for any help.

Reset profile? this means you created a new one?
You've run the repair tool, scanpst.exe, on any pst's that the profile uses?
You've run Detect/Repair?
You are using an OL2003 unicode pst?

Hi,

If I understood properly, your issue is: Outlook 2003 often hangs on
Windows XP system. Is that correct?

Based on my experience, there are many reasons that can cause Outlook hang.
To help us narrow it down, I would like to suggest as below:

* Suggestion 1: Test in Outlook Safe Mode
=====================
Outlook Safe Mode can narrow down issues which are caused by any
extensions, corrupted resources, files, registries, or templates.

1. Click Start | Run.
2. In the Open box, type: "Outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks)
Notes: There is a space character between Outlook and the forward slash (/).
3. Click OK.

If Outlook works fine ini /safe, then do the following steps to resolve
this issue:

# Step 1: Disable Outlook add-ins
1. Select Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options>Add-In Manager and then
clear all the checkboxes.
2. Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart Outlook,
and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can
determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.

# Step 2: Disable Instant Messaging
1. Start Outlook. Click Tools>Options.
2. On the Other tab, uncheck "Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft
Outlook". Click OK to save the settings.
3. Restart Outlook.

# Step 3: Disable Word Editor:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Mail Format.
2. Click to clear the "Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages" check
box.

* Suggestion 2: Windows Safe Mode and clean boot
====================
Please first perform a Safe Mode in Windows XP by following the steps below:

1. Restart Windows.
2. At the boot sequence, long press F8 key to invoke startup menu.
3. Choose Safe Mode on the menu and press Enter.
4. After Windows starts in Safe Mode, determine if this issue still
persists.

If this issue does not occur in Safe Mode, then please perform a clean boot
to solve this issue:

1. Click Start>Run, type "msconfig" in the Open box (without the quotation
marks), and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Process
System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes.
You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.
3. On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box,
and then click Disable All.
4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
5. After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms still occur.

If it works fine after Windows clean boot, please obtain the detailed
troubleshooting steps in our KB article:

310353 How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

If the suggestions all fail, then please provide more information for
further research:

* Information Collection
==================
1. Have you applied all the latest updates for both Office 2003 and Windows
XP?
2. Does this occur on another system account? Please create a new one to
test.
3. What do you mean "reset the profile"? Do you mean creating a new Outlook
profile?
4. If the answer of question 3 is NO, then please create a new Outlook 2003
profile to test.

Hope the suggestions help!

Leon Hao

Thanks to both DL and Leon for the prompt replies.

First of all I would like to explain that only Outlook which is freezing up.
Not XP. I have to use the Task Manager to kill Outlook. I have updated
both the system and Office 2003 from Microsoft update. This did not resolve
it. In fact I can't even get to Tools > Options. It hangs right from the
outset. I also run the repair and this did not help.

Many thanks

Hi,

The hang issues are usually caused by the applications or add-ins other
than Outlook itself. Have you tried the following two suggestions to narrow
down the issue?

Suggestion 1: Test in Outlook Safe Mode
Suggestion 2: Windows Safe Mode and clean boot

If you do, would you please tell me the results? Additionally, please
kindly provide the following information for further research and test:

* Information Collection
==================
1. Does this occur on another system account? Please create a new one to
test.
2. What do you mean "reset the profile"? Do you mean creating a new Outlook
profile?
3. If the answer of question 3 is NO, then please create a new Outlook 2003
profile to test.

I'm looking forward to hear from you!

Hello Leon

I went through the clean boot. This did not help.
I then started Outlook in safe mode. This has helped. Then I restarted
Outlook in normal mode and cleared all all the add-in boxes from
Tools>Otions>Other>Advanced Option>Add-in Manager. Restarted Outlook and
tested it. It freezes up when forwarding emails.

But if I disable the mail editor from the Mail Format tab. It does not
freeze. For the work purposes, I do not wish to disable this.

By "reset the mail profile", I meant created a new profile.

I have not tested it in another system as we use local profiles and this
will consume time and resources.

Many thanks

Hi,

It seems this issue does not occur if Word is not the default e-mail editor.

If so, I guess some key components of Office installation may have been
corrupted. In this point, I suggest you try the following suggestions:

* Suggestion 1: Repair Office
=================
1. Click Start>Control Panel
2. Double click Add / Remove Programs, and highlight Microsoft Office 2003,
then click Change.
3. Choose Reinstall or Repair then click Next.
4. Choose Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation then click
Install.

If it does not help, you may need to perform a clean remove/reinstall.

* Suggestion 2: Clean remove of Office 2003
======================
1. Quit all running programs.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

<http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48
D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe>
3. After you have installed the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click
Start>All Programs>Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office 2003 entry in the list and then click
Remove. Click OK and wait for the process to end. If any other stand alone
Office applications (such as Visio and Project) appear on the list, please
also remove them. Then, click Exit to close the Windows Installer Cleanup
utility.
5. Click Start>Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in the
Open box and press Enter.
6. Locate the registry keys below and click Delete from the Edit menu.
Click OK on the following warning dialog box.
Note: Please go to File>Export and backup all the registry first.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office
Quit Registry Editor.
7. Delete or rename the following folders or files if they exist:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Publisher
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office
C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11
8. Click Start>Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks) in the
Open box and press Enter. Delete all the files and folders within it. If
there are some files which cannot be deleted, just leave them alone and
this will not affect the result.
9. Empty the Recycle Bin.
10. To remove MAPI, search for and rename the following folders/files if
they exist:
C:\Windows\system32\mapi32.dll
C:\Windows\system32\mapisvc.inf
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi
11. Restart your computer and install Office 2003 again.
