Outlook Express

The problems I'm having are no where near as complex as
the ones I read about in your magazine but just as
annoying.

I've got two computers having similar problems in Outlook
Express. I've been to Microsoft Web page and downloaded
all the patches and fixes there where but to no avail.
I've even found the exact help page where it describes my
problem and the fix for it by editing the registry. I
realize the importance of not messing up the registry and
therefore following directions to the letter but this fix
was to no avail either.

What the problem is, on one computer, Outlook Express is
not spell checking. It has the tab for spelling option
under the options dropdown tab and all the spelling
options that need to be are checked but when I go to send
or use spell check under Tools I get the message "spell
check has encountered an error" or something to this
effect and do you want to send anyway?\

The problem on the other computer is the "Spell" option
is not even there when I open the "Options" menu to turn
on spell check.

I have a third computer that is working fine.

All computers are running either XP home edition or XP
professional edition. They are all fairly new but the
ones that are giving me this problem are the newest of
the three. One has the XP home edition and the other has
the XP professional edition.

I've done extensive research as to how these programs
work with XP and they say they use your word processor's
dictionary that is on the computer. I have checked both
computers for their word processors programs and they are
working fine. They have dictionaries and are grammar and
spell checking just fine. Maybe the problem is with
Microsoft. Are they having problems with the new editions
of XP and if so is there a patch that would load the
necessary fixes for these issues.

I have downloaded the Eudora e-mail program on a trial
basis and the spell check is working fine so this makes
Outlook Express look like the culprit. I know I could
change to Eudora for these two computers but my wife and
son are used to using Outlook Express but without a fix
this may be my only recourse.

Any ideas would be of help.

Thanks, one of you subscribers to Maximum PC, Daniel and
