Outlook Express/XP/Spell checker/Office 97

I'm running XP and Office 97. When I send an e-mail from
Outlook express it will not check the spelling, even
though I have checked the "check spelling before sending"
option. It seems that the spell checker fails every time.
With the message "spell checker has failed"
Anyone got the answer?
