During or after conversion.

1. Some getting used to?

The surface is pretty much the same. It'll be very familiar.
2. A snap?
Yup.

3. A disaster?

I wouldn't say that but there are some bugs to be worked out. However it's
perfectly functional and usable.

Hi, Vernon.

I'd say Justin's comments are right on. But...

There's no "conversion". WinXP and prior have OE; WM cannot be installed on
WinXP. Vista has WM, and OE cannot be installed on it. Just as OE was
"built in" to WinXP, WM is "built in" to Vista. If you have Vista, then you
have WM - and vice versa. So there's no way to "convert" from one mail
program to the other on either platform.

But the transition might seem like a "conversion" for us users. ;^}

The only part of the transition that might be called a conversion is
Importing prior mail accounts and messages from OE. OE keeps all mail files
in a few folders. A thousand email messages in a single folder are stored
as a single large .dbx file. Corruption in a single message might make the
other 999 messages inaccessible, too. WM keeps each email in a separate
..eml file, so a thousand messages requires a thousand .eml files.
Corruption in one message won't affect the others. But if we want to keep
our old OE message store and use it in WM (and most of us do), then we must
Import that data and let WM "convert" it to the new database format. It's a
one-time project, but it might take several hours if you have a lot of
messages to bring forward. (Don't bother to import newsgroup posts; WM will
need to download those again from the news servers.) If you don't need or
want to import old emails, then forget this whole paragraph.

Once the messages are imported, using WM feels very much like using OE. WM
was extensively rewritten from OE, but most of the changes are "under the
skin". The user interface changes are evolutionary, not revolutionary.

But even importing settings from XP Pro, it doesn't allow me the access to
my hotmail accounts that I had setup in XP.
Reading email in my browser isn't my idea of an improvement.

"Windows Live Mail Desktop" works like outlook express (multi accounts
including hotmail.) Most imports are done at first run. So far so good.

WLMd is much better then Windows Mail. For some reason they stopped
development on Windows Mail. I think it's because of the choice to move
forward with Outlook Express Live (OEL). Who knows. However they continued
development on WLMd and most of that work will branch into OEL.

However, again, WLMd has bugs as well. It's still in beta. So expect small
"issues".

A large disadvantage, for me at least, of WLMd is that it doesn't
mark posts in multiple groups as read.

According to others in this NG both Windows Mail and WLMd will do that.

Of course it does - if you install 'newsworthy' add-on

Wow! Real news!

Cool... I'll try that.

If they made a combine & decode
I'd use TB by default.

As for now Newsworthy is compatible only with Thunderbird 1.5.X.X -
which is still much better than OE or WM.

I've just replaced Tbird 2 with 1.5.X.X

The Newsworthy install instructions say...

....In Mozilla Thunderbird, open Add-ons from the Tools menu...

Unfortunately the Add-ons button, present in TB2,
has gone walkabout in, my install of, TB1.5.

What a bummer.

I've used polish version of TB 1.5, but as far as i remember you should
look for 'extensions' or something like this from the tools menu .

Use your common sense, Julian.

I've tried extensions, Newsworthy can't be installed by that function.

Ah... a showstopper I'm afraid.

Cheers anyway.
