Windows XP Professional
Outlook Express is taking up to half a minute to open
after which it runs fine. I have no idea why this started
unless it is because of a Windows security update.
Can anyone help with any ideas??????

Outlook Express attempts to start MSN Messenger whenever
it opens. If you have disabled Messenger, such a delay
occurs. It can be fixed in the registry; should you need
instructions email me at my sacrificial spam magnet

This behavior is from disabling Messenger from OE. This corrects it:

Disable/Remove Windows Messenger
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm

Manual:

If you disable Messenger, OE takes forever to load if you have the Contacts
pane enabled.

Only 3 Registry edits are required to stop Messenger and get rid of the
delay in OE.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client

Add the following values as New, DWord Values:

PreventRun
PreventAutoRun

Set the value of each of these to 1

Go to: Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWord value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the
Contacts pane enabled).
