Hello,

As this forum helped me with a previous problem, I am hoping that I am in
the right place to solve this one, I have been sent an email from my work,
when I try to open the attatchment I get the message " file does not have a
program associated with it for performing this action. create an association
in the folder options control panel", any ideas how I do this I would be very
grateful.

running outlook express 6, windows xp home sp2 installed

Hi Gerry,

It could be that the program required to open that type of file is not
installed on your computer. What is the file extension (the letters
following the "dot" in the file name) for the attachment?

Since you didn't tell us the extension of the file you received, it is
not possible to be specific. However, what this means is that you don't
have any program installed that is associated with that particular file
type. Therefore, Windows is asking you to choose a program that you
know will open the file.

Example 1: You received file.pdf but don't have Acrobat Reader
installed. Windows will ask you what to use, but you don't have
anything that will work. You download and install Acrobat Reader and
now *.pdf files are associated with that program.

Example 2: You received file.xls but don't have MS Excel installed. You
tell Windows to associate .xls files with Corel Quattro Pro (if they
are not already associated; this is just an example).

Here is a link where you can look up file extensions:

http://filext.com/

Or you could email the sender back and ask them what they sent you. I'd
be very wary of opening anything that came as an attachment to an
email.

What kind of file did they send you? You'll need a program installed on your
computer that opens that specific file type.

Malke,

Thank for trying to help me, I apologize for not giving enough information
in the first post, and am quite a novice and did not realize, I have been to
the file page that you offered and it appears the file is made in power point

You're welcome for the response. Do you have Microsoft PowerPoint installed
on your computer? If not, then you can d/load and install the PowerPoint
Viewer from here:
