outlook express & folders

Why does Outlook Express change the "date modified" on every folder
(where my messages are stored) even when no new mail is stored there?
How can I prevent that from happening? It makes my backups a little
fatter -- by a couple of hundred MBs.

"Date Modified" will change whenever you (1) access the folder and (2)
compact the folder. This is default behavior.
