I have a Windows XP SP2 system that has Outlook Express (OE) with .bak files
in the Recycle Bin. How do I get them back into OE?

Thank you for your support,

Hi Steve,

Usually right clicking on the file and selecting "Restore" will put it
back in it's location. If you have more than one though, they will just
keep getting overwritten. Restore the one you need, leave the rest.

Have you recently compacted your OE folders? Every 100 times you close OE, it
should automatically offer to compact your folders. During the process, OE will
place a copy of each folder in the Recycle Bin with a .bak extension. Should a
problem develop during compaction, you would be able to recover your messages
from the Recycle Bin by renaming the .bak files .dbx and restoring them to your
OE message store.

Bottom line is that unless you're having problems with OE you don't need to
restore those files. You can delete them from the Recycle Bin any time you want.

Take a look at these web sites for more info.

Check out the box outlined in red.

I suspect they are only used during the "compacting" of the Oailbox files,
and then moved to the trash....
ie - compacting => copying to new file, renaming, trashing old

They are copies made before the compacting as a safety measure and can be
used to restore an OE folder to what it was before the compacting (which
does not compress anything).

How can I get the OE .bak files out of the Recycle Bin and restored back

I have tried to rename the .bak files within the Recycle Bin and there is no
option to rename files. How do I get the 'option' for 'rename' highlighted?
I have tried to 'restore' the files , but they just disappear and then
reappear when I do a refresh.

Thank you for your support.

I believe I haven't made myself clear about the problem I have. There are a
lot of .bak files within the Recycle Bin. I cannot restore them. When I
select 'restore' on a file or a range of files, they will disappear; however,
when I do a refresh within the Recycle Bin they reappear. How do I get these
..bak files from the Recycle Bin back into OE?

I hope I am not sounding redundent, I just am not sure of why the process of
restoring these files is not working.

Than you,

Steve,

When you right click and Restore the .bak files, the .bak files are
place back where they came from, by default they are at C:\Documents
and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}
\Microsoft\Outlook Express.

With OE closed, use Explorer to go to that folder, rename any
existing .dbx files to .dbx.old or something like that, then rename
the .bak files to .dbx.
When you open OE, your mail will have been restored.
If you are satisfied with the results, delete the .dbx.old files.

Good luck.

Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069 (see the "Note" section
under Resolution; You do NOT need to download either of the updates on that
page!)

The BAK files are Restored to your store folder
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).

Example: Close Outlook Express | Restore, e.g., INBOX.BAK | Open Windows
Explorer to your store folder* | Delete INBOX.DBX or Move it to another
Windows folder (e.g., one you created on your desktop for this purpose) |
Right-click on INBOX.BAK and Rename it to INBOX.DBX | Close Windows Explorer
| Open Outlook Express and your Inbox folder should contain any/all messages
that were in it when you last compacted all OE folders.

If you're missing any messages, you can try running DBXtract or DBXpress on
the moved INBOX.DBX file. Any messages recovered can be dragged to an open
OE folder.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DBXtract
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
DBXpress (faster, more powerful, with even greater functionality)
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are marked as hidden by
default. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show
Hidden Files and Folders via Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View
(cf. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html).
