did they use outlook express for their e-mails, if so have the e-mails
already been downloaded into outlook, or are they new e-mails that have been
sent since the user was deleted???

Outlook Express uses POP3, which means that it downloads e-mail from the
server.
If you have specifically configured Outlook Express to leave a copy of
messages on server, those messages will still be on the server.
If you did not so configure OE, messages are deleted from the server when
OE downloads them.
If you back up your computer regularly, you can restore from backup.
If you do not have a backup, those e-mails were deleted when you deleted the
user.
Those messages are gone forever.

In future, back up e-Mail in Outlook Express thus:
File | Export | Messages

Pete:
1. The OP stated very clearly "Outlook Express".
2. Outlook and Outlook Express are two completely different applications.
Please don't add your confusion to other people's confusion.
3. When you have nothing useful to offer, please don't post.

Not necessarily, but it would be a very, very, long shot. Firstly, turn off
the computer if you can. Save nothing on it (which will result in any
deleted files being overwritten).

It is possible (but extremely unlikely) that the *.dbx file(s) from A's
account have not been overwritten - just deleted. If you use a file undelete
program to get back those files, it should be possible to reopen them again
in OE. (Check http://lists.thedatalist.com/ or Tucows for programs such as
FreeUndelete). It may be possible to recreate A's account. Then create as
many local folders in OE as you have retrieved *.dbx files. Name them 1, 2,
3, etc. You will find that OE has created dbx folders with the same name
(right click on any of the folders and select "Properties" to see where they
are on the C: drive). Then, using Windows Explorer, go to the folder with
those 1.dbx, 2.dbx, etc folders and delete them. Rename the undeleted *.dbx
folders you have found to 1.dbx, 2.dbx, etc and put them into the location
you have just deleted the folders from. You should then find that when you
click on local folder "1" in OE, OE will open the undeleted folder, and you
should be able to read the emails.

I also suggest that you repost your original question in
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general, as I am sure that this question has
been asked before, and there may be an easier and more effective way that
the above.

Good luck, and in future remember to backup or use a program such as Acronis
TrueImage.
