If you do not mind losing the mail in your Inbox, delete the Inbox.dbx file for your
Identity, then reboot, then open Outlook Express, the Inbox.dbx file will be recreated
(empty of course).

Alternatively there are several programs out there that can repair corrupt OE
DBX files, have a look on google for "outlook express" +recovery. You may
have to pay for the tool though and you may lose the last message but you
should be able to recover most if not all messages

Both Outlook & Outlook Express data stores require an occasional
maintenance operation. Outlook Express stores (.dbx) should have a
Compress folders run on them. Outlook has a stand-alone tool ScanPst
that checks Pst modules for errors.
In my experience, OE tends to get tangled up more than Outlook. I
move the mailbox store locations to a separate partition away from XP.
They (Mailbox folders) get a weekly backup along with my other My
Docs data. OE tends to create new folders, such as Inbox (1).dbx.
Why it (OE) does that must be some inconsistency in the Folders.dbx.
Anyway, the point is that Mailbox data stores should be backed up &
done quite frequently. I do know that Outlook .Pst's have some size
limitations and you have to be careful not to overload them, by doing
a regular Archive. Some the most frustrating work I've ever done was
trying to fix/resolve Outlook mailbox issues.

Which dbx file? This is for the Inbox, but can be applied to any file.

Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store folder will reveal the location
of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start>Run>Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise,
write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WindowsXP & 2K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder
Options>View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in
question {Inbox.dbx} and rename it to Inboxold.dbx. A new,
empty Inbox will be created automatically when you open OE.

You will need a tool to retrieve the messages.

DBXtract: {Cost: $5.00}
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx

DBXpress: {$24.95, but much faster for large files}
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

If you do not care about saving any mail, just delete the Inbox.dbx file
rather than rename it.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually
become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing
mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly.

***After*** you have retrieved the old mail, follow up by compacting
your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the
compacting is completed.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background
and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

Hi Robear,

I am a firm believer that E-mail scanning is *more* that worthless. :-D

When I installed AVG7, I did not install the E-Mail Scanner.

Thought that this might interest you...

[[In that case you
do not need the Personal E-mail Scanner, you should uninstall it - it only
uselessly use harddrive space and system resources.]]

[[E-mail scanner is not fully functional
If AVG Control center displays an error message "E-mail scanner is not fully
functional", please left-click the E-mail scanner window (the red one), in
the bottom part of the AVG Control Center window you will see a detailed
description of why the E-mail scanner does not work properly. Following
reasons may occur:

Personal E-mail scanner is not configured

If you are using Outlook Express program, or other mail program than MS
Outlook, The BAT!, or Eudora program, it is necessary to configure the
Personal E-mail scanner (AVG EMS) to scan mail in your e-mail program.

If you are using any of the any of the e-mail programs that are supported by
AVG Free (MS Outlook, The BAT!, Eudora), the Personal E-mail Scanner is
installed needlessly because mail is scanned by AVG Free directly by a
special plugin developed for each of these e-mail programs. In that case you
do not need the Personal E-mail Scanner, you should uninstall it - it only
uselessly use harddrive space and system resources. Uninstallation process
is described here.]]

[[How to install/uninstall AVG Free components?
If you want to install or uninstall AVG Free components (e-mail plug-in for
example), you have to run AVG Free installation using a downloaded
installation file from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/.

Running the installation process recognises the existence of installed AVG
Free and the Add/Remove Components option is offered.

Reinstalling and using the Add/Remove option is necessary for example for
the case that there is a new supported e-mail client (Outlook/Eudora/The
Bat!) installed on the PC after the installation of AVG Free.]]
